Chapter 13

The real complications didn’t set in at once. It took another storm to set loose a chain of events from which there might be no return. But before that Nicole was pleasantly surprised by how much fun she was having with Lucien and her lovely Yum-Yum. Everyone was enchanted by Yum-Yum and Popcorn, with the possible exception of Bojangles. The first time he encountered the puppies the look on his face was priceless.

That night they were all in the big sunroom at Ruth and Mac’s house. Corey had brought Popcorn over to meet her grandparents, and Nicole and Lucien had brought Yum-Yum so she could bond with her sister. Bojangles came into the room and the puppies went running past him so fast they didn’t seem to see him. He saw them, however, and he almost passed out. His look said, “What in the world have you brought into this house?” so plainly that everyone laughed, and he was so offended he left the room in a huff. Nicole was the first one to express concern for him.

“I think we hurt his feelings,” she said. “I hope he gets used to the puppies. He’s bound to see them around from time to time.”

Mac assured her that he’d get used to it. “My bride and I are going to Hawaii next week, so he’ll have plenty of time to adjust. Feel free to bring them over every day if you want. He could use some exercise, and I think those little ones will provide it.”

Lucien raised an eyebrow. “You’re going to Hawaii? How come?”

Mac put his arm around Ruth and kissed her neck. “We’re newlyweds, if you recall, and we don’t need a reason to get away. We’re also grown, and we don’t need permission to leave town.”

Ruth smiled at her husband’s answer, but she ex-plained,”We’re going to Hawaii to sell my cottage. I don’t use it that much, and I decided to sell it and use the proceeds for hurricane relief. But first we’re going to enjoy it together for a few days,” she said, giving Mac a beautiful smile.

Nicole was about to tell Ruth how much she admired her generous gesture when Mac fixed Lucien with a stern gaze. “We’re counting on you to take care of our guest while we’re gone. This is a big house, and it can get lonely for one person. Everyone else has left for new homes now that rebuilding has begun. You keep an eye out for her, hear?”

Lucien gave his father a look that was completely serious and assured him that Nicole’s comfort was his only concern. “Don’t worry, Judge, I’ve got this,” he said. Then he flashed Nicole a bold yet intimate smile. “I’m like that insurance company, baby. You’ll be in good hands with me.”

His words were reassuring, but the look in his eyes was anything but. This was just what she didn’t need, more temptation. She was trying to listen to something Ruth was saying to her while she was taking a guarded look at Lucien.
